## Description

Island Lab is a coastal resilience research and development organization that helps communities understand and steward the interconnected systems shaping their futures. Working with ports, cities, tribes, and regional networks, it focuses on the underwater parts of the commons—places that are difficult to monitor and changing rapidly. Its work spans coastal communities from Pollica in southern Italy to the Salish Sea.

The organization combines place-based research, community gatherings, and practical prototyping. It brings together ecological, economic, cultural, and political information with local knowledge to reveal how a system works and where data may differ from reality. It then convenes people to share perspectives, develop ideas, and shape solutions grounded in their community and environment.

Island Lab designs bespoke tools for local needs, including sensor networks, data visualizations, maps, locally owned data infrastructure, and software and hardware products. It also develops simulations, stories, and other prototypes to test ideas. Alongside research, design, and building, Island Lab offers consulting, go-to-market strategy, fundraising, and sales support to help turn prototypes into funded programs.
