## Description

Italian Roots Project is an educational resource for people exploring Italian ancestry, family history, and citizenship by descent. Its free guides offer a step-by-step approach to tracing ancestors, starting with family documents and working back to an ancestral town, or comune. Readers can learn to search Italy’s Portale Antenati and FamilySearch, interpret civil and church records, request documents from Italian town halls, and address common research challenges such as missing records and name variations.

The site also explains Italian citizenship by descent, including eligibility, required documents, application routes, the 1948 rule, and changes introduced by the 2025 reform. Additional resources explore Italian surname origins, regional naming patterns, anglicized names, DNA testing, and ways to connect DNA results with historical records. For those interested in family heritage, the project covers ancestral travel, Italian regions, emigration, and Italian-American history. Visitors can download a free genealogy quick-start checklist, while a linked MyHeritage trial offers a separate option for building family trees and searching records.
