## Description

Jap Smits is an ecological consultancy and nature photography practice established in 2021, led by ecologist and former Staatsbosbeheer forest ranger Jap Smits. Drawing on more than 40 years of experience managing heathland and raised bogs in the Kempen and Peel districts, Smits specializes in the cultural history, ecology and management of Atlantic heath landscapes. His expertise also includes species-rich grasslands and the conservation of distinctive insect communities, supported by years of monitoring characteristic plants and animals.

The practice offers ecological advice and management services, alongside workshops, lectures, films, books, guided walks and nature photography. Training includes a two-day heathland management course, delivered with Naturio ecological courses, and a practical and theoretical introductory course on identifying ants, with a focus on species and habitats in eastern Brabant. The courses share current knowledge and explore responsible approaches to landscape management and biodiversity.

Visitors can also book themed, location-based inspirational walks. Smits co-authored Heidebeheer: Moderne methoden in een eeuwenoud landschap, available as a hardcover by email.
