## Description

The JayHawk Institute is an open resource dedicated to exploring the past, present, and developing traditions of Pacific Northwest cultures. Guided by integrity and respect for ancestral teachings, it shares knowledge of Indigenous art, history, language, spirituality, and technology, connecting these traditions with audiences in the Pacific Northwest and around the world. The institute was founded by Pacific Northwest Native-style artist Duane Pasco and his wife, Betty, a Suquamish tribal elder, weaver, artist, and teacher. Their aim was to pass on their knowledge and enthusiasm for regional traditions and culture to students, tribal members, and others.

The institute’s work includes teaching, projects, and resources focused on subjects such as Northwest Coast canoes, canoe building, cedar bark canoe sails, and tool making. Its offerings also include short films and a canoe shed, while a trade exhibit has been presented at the Kitsap History Museum. The institute is developing a film about Duane Pasco’s life and work, honoring his skill, generosity, and lasting influence as a teacher of the arts.
