About

Description

Josephine Herrick Project (JHP) is a brand dedicated to amplifying underrepresented voices through photography. With a history spanning eight decades, JHP has been teaching photography and showcasing work by individuals from under-resourced communities. Their program participants encompass a diverse range, including children in culturally diverse and low-income neighborhoods, immigrant and refugee teens, individuals with cognitive, emotional, or physical disabilities, military veterans, vulnerable seniors, and people of all ages living in public housing.

JHP ensures that the photography created by these individuals is exhibited in public spaces such as cafes, libraries, galleries, streets, and parks. This allows their work to reach not only their own communities but also wider, more diverse audiences. At the core of JHP's efforts are their values of Voice, Skills, and Inclusivity.

They envision a vibrant, creative society where everyone can express themselves through images. Their mission is to give underrepresented voices a platform through photography, enabling them to see differently, communicate across cultures, and advocate for themselves and their communities. JHP follows an experiential teaching model, ensuring that program participants have cameras in hand from day one.

They collaborate to create and review their images, developing visual literacy and vocabulary while making personal connections to photographs. JHP's teaching artists guide learning by asking critical questions rather than providing answers. In addition to technical skills, JHP aims to cultivate visual literacy, creativity, critical thinking, self-advocacy, and community engagement.

Located in New York, Josephine Herrick Project is committed to promoting relationships, developing visual literacy through photo critiques, and sparking creativity and engagement with photo walks. Their teaching artists are trained in experiential pedagogy and facilitate a balance between teacher modeling, class discussion, and participant-led learning. Each program is designed to meet the specific needs of the community it serves through partnerships with local organizations.

By supporting Josephine Herrick Project, individuals can contribute to their mission of amplifying underrepresented voices through photography. Josephine Herrick Project, Inc
