## Description

Joutsentanssi is an annual contemporary dance festival held in Kuhmo, Finland, with activities in the Kalevala nature area and the town centre. Its programme welcomes participants of all ages, from children to older adults, bringing dance into both natural and community settings. The festival’s workshops include a popular summer camp for schoolchildren, where the fee covers daily lunch and guided dance sessions in nature. Further activities are offered for young people and adults, alongside a dance session for families and performances for older people in care homes.

Joutsentanssi also runs a week-long residency on Lentua Island for two or three artists. At the end of the residency, the artists share an informal presentation during the festival’s closing performance evening. The festival additionally presents a visiting performance outdoors, in the Kalevala area or Kuhmo town centre, weather permitting. These performances are selected by invitation by members of the Joutsentanssi board. In 2026, Joutsentanssi is part of the Oulu European Capital of Culture programme, connecting dance, art and cultural events across the northern region.
