Jugend forscht is Germany's most well-known young talent competition. The aim of the brand is to inspire young people in the fields of mathematics, computer science, natural sciences, and technology, as well as to discover and nurture their talents. Every year, there are over 120 competitions held nationwide. Youth from the 4th grade up to the age of 21 can participate by choosing an interesting research project on their own. Winners are rewarded with attractive cash and non-cash prizes. Jugend forscht serves as a talent factory with a model character and has long been practicing reform approaches in the current education discussion. The project work offers an optimal framework for individually promoting students according to their abilities. Through creative and research-based learning, young people can become familiar with the tools of scientific work at an early stage. This equips them with methodological skills that are essential in our knowledge society. Jugend forscht is a widely established network that engages all participants in the common goal of promoting young talent. The competition is supported by the Federal Government, states, the stern magazine, businesses, science, and schools. The Federal Minister of Education and Research is the chair of the foundation's board of trustees, and the President of Germany serves as the patron of the competition. Jugend forscht is an effective instrument for promoting young talent, with nine out of ten successful participants going on to study a STEM subject later on. Many of them become scientists at universities and research institutions or hold management positions in companies. Jugend forscht has been described by Andreas von Bechtolsheim, the 1974 national winner and founder of SUN Microsystems, as the moment when life became interesting for him. Jugend forscht also offers various ways for individuals and organizations to support the competition financially and organizationally.
