## Description

Katunsky Biosphere Reserve is a protected natural area managed under Russia’s Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment. Established in 1991, it covers 151,664 hectares in the high-altitude Katun Range of the Ust-Koksa district in the Altai Republic, with landscapes ranging from 1,300 to 3,280 metres. The reserve lies beside Mount Belukha, Siberia’s highest peak and part of a UNESCO World Heritage site. It joined UNESCO’s World Network of Biosphere Reserves in 2000.

The reserve’s work includes protecting ecosystems and wildlife, scientific research and environmental monitoring, international cooperation, and education about nature and local traditions. Visitors can explore guided ecological trails and tourism routes, including paths to mountain lakes, waterfalls, forests, and the foothills of Belukha. The reserve also provides guest houses and paid visitor services. At its central grounds, guests can visit an Altai culture museum, a stone garden, and an environmental education site. Public programs include exhibitions, festivals, competitions, children’s activities, and educational events that encourage conservation and responsible enjoyment of the region.
