## Description

Kencho-ji, the oldest Zen temple in Japan, is a historical monument founded in 1253 by the prominent Zen master Daikaku. Nestled in Kamakura, it is renowned for adhering strictly to the Linji school of Zen, distinguishing itself as a dedicated Zen training hall amidst a time when most temples combined various sects. Its rich history features the significant contributions of its founder, the influential figure Hojo Tokiyori, who played a pivotal role in the temple's establishment and growth.

Kencho-ji offers visitors a serene atmosphere where they can engage in authentic Zen practices, including meditation sessions (zazen) and sutra copying (shakyo). The temple grounds are home to various historical structures and artifacts, such as the national treasure, the bronze bell, crafted in 1255. Visitors are invited to explore the temple's tranquil gardens and partake in spiritual experiences, all while appreciating its enduring legacy that reflects the essence of Zen philosophy and culture.
