About
Description
KIWA, or the Koreatown Immigrant Workers Alliance, is a brand that has been working tirelessly since 1992 to address worker exploitation among Korean and Latino workers in Koreatown. Their mission is to create a more just Los Angeles by advocating for the rights of immigrant workers and struggling in solidarity with other communities. In their early years, KIWA fought for compensation funds for workers whose livelihoods were destroyed in the aftermath of the Los Angeles Civil Unrest.
They also played a pivotal role in exposing modern-day slave labor sweatshops and securing over $2 million in restitution for workers. Over the years, KIWA has expanded its focus to include organizing workers in the restaurant and supermarket industries, where the majority of jobs in Koreatown are found. They have also extended their efforts to housing and neighborhood rights, equitable development policies, and participatory community planning.
Combining grassroots organizing, leadership development, services, and policy advocacy, KIWA empowers immigrant workers and residents in Koreatown to contribute to the social, cultural, and economic development of their neighborhood. Join their cause to support a just and inclusive economy for all
