## Description

Kaikōura Ocean Research Institute Incorporated (KORI) is a network of marine researchers and educators working to protect the marine environment and wildlife of Kaikōura, New Zealand. Established in 2012, the institute conducts scientific research to improve understanding of local marine species and the threats they face. KORI combines this research with public education, supporting conservation in a region that is home to some critically endangered wildlife.

The institute shares its work through research projects, annual reports, factfiles, blog posts and community events. Its activities include the Hector’s Dolphin Project and the Great Kaikōura Whale Count, which brings volunteers together to observe and document whales and other cetaceans. KORI also supports learning opportunities for young people, including the Young Marine Biologists Programme and children’s holiday activities. Community members can take part by sharing Hector’s dolphin sightings, attending events, volunteering or donating. Through its research, education and public involvement, KORI aims to increase scientific and community understanding while encouraging the protection of Kaikōura’s marine life.
