## Description

The Tor Project, founded in 2006 as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, is dedicated to promoting internet privacy and freedom. Originating from a research initiative in the mid-1990s, the project has evolved into a global movement for digital rights, offering the Tor network and Tor Browser as vital tools for users seeking protection against surveillance and censorship. Tor utilizes an innovative method known as onion routing, which encrypts user data and routes it through multiple servers, ensuring anonymity online.

The Tor Browser, launched in 2008, has made secure browsing accessible to everyday users, empowering activists and ordinary citizens to share information freely, especially during critical moments like the Arab Spring and in the wake of the Snowden revelations. The Tor Project has built a diverse global community of volunteers who operate thousands of relays, maintaining the integrity and availability of the network. Committed to transparency and human rights, the Tor Project advocates for an uncensored internet, striving to make privacy a reality for everyone.
