Kassenzahnärztliche Bundesvereinigung

The Kassenzahnärztliche Bundesvereinigung (KZBV) is a public corporation that represents the interests of nearly 63,000 dentists participating in contractual dental care. The KZBV is the umbrella organization of the 17 Kassenzahnärztlichen Vereinigungen (KZVen) in the various German states. Their main task is to ensure contractual dental care, which includes dental treatment, prosthetic dentistry, and orthodontic measures for insured individuals and their dependents.

The KZBV plays a crucial role in the Gemeinsamer Bundesausschuss (G-BA), the most important decision-making body for joint self-administration in Germany's healthcare sector. Alongside other institutions and organizations representing doctors, hospitals, and health insurance companies, the KZBV shapes the range of services covered by statutory health insurance (GKV). With around 90 percent of the population being legally insured, the KZBV is responsible for safeguarding the rights of dentists, negotiating contracts, and ensuring adequate compensation.

The KZBV's funding comes from membership fees paid by the KZVen, who, in turn, are funded by their own members, the contracted dentists. Unlike statutory health insurance funds, which are primarily financed by set contributions and government funding, the KZBV and KZVen rely entirely on funds collected from their members through contractual self-administration.
