## Description

The Coastal Wetlands Planning, Protection, and Restoration Act (CWPPRA), often referred to as the Breaux Act, is a vital federal initiative established in 1990 to safeguard and restore the coastal wetlands of Louisiana. With a primary focus on conservation, CWPPRA has authorized 234 restoration projects covering approximately 100,000 acres, employing a collaborative approach involving multiple federal agencies and the State of Louisiana. 

The program's diverse array of projects includes freshwater and sediment diversions, marsh creation, ridge restoration, and shoreline protection techniques such as rock breakwaters and living shorelines. These projects are designed to combat wetland erosion, enhance ecosystems, and improve community resilience against storms. CWPPRA emphasizes cost-effective restoration strategies, utilizing an annual budget between $30 million to $80 million funded by the Sport Fish Restoration and Boating Safety Trust Fund.

Beyond implementation, CWPPRA promotes innovative restoration through demonstration projects and maintains a comprehensive coastwide monitoring program, ensuring that the restoration efforts adapt and evolve to meet changing environmental needs. The program stands as a cornerstone in the collective effort to restore Louisiana's vital coastal landscapes.
