## Description

The Deutscher Landkreistag (DLT) is the national municipal association representing Germany’s 294 counties. Together, these counties cover about 96 percent of the country’s area and serve 57 million people, or 68 percent of Germany’s population. The association represents county interests and promotes the role of local government in national and European policymaking, with particular attention to rural regions and equivalent living conditions.

The DLT shares information on county responsibilities and current issues, including public finances, healthcare, care services, emergency response, digitalisation, climate and energy, transport, and reducing bureaucracy. It publishes policy positions, reports, practical guidance and reference materials, including its “Der Landkreis” journal and a regularly updated album of Germany’s counties and their elected representatives. Its guidance on artificial intelligence and automation helps county administrations assess opportunities and related legal, organisational and cultural challenges.

The association also convenes events, maintains committees and forums, and provides news, publications and resources for counties, public officials and other interested audiences. Its work focuses on strengthening county services and representing local government concerns.
