## Description

Lanternbox is a photo and video backup service operated by Lanternbox Labs GmbH, based in Munich, Germany. Its apps for iOS and Android automatically copy photos and videos from phones to servers in Germany and Finland, preserving original files at full resolution, including HEIC, JPEG, RAW and 4K video. The service offers 5 GB of free storage, with paid plans available for users who need more space.

Lanternbox encrypts files in transit and on disk, and its optional end-to-end encryption keeps the keys on users’ devices. Backups run in the background, by default over Wi-Fi while charging, and uploads can resume after interruptions. Once an item is stored in two regions, users can remove its local copy while retaining a thumbnail and restore the original when needed. Additional features include local search by date, place or image content, with tagging performed on the device, and shareable albums that recipients can view in a browser without an account or app. Lanternbox also provides a web gallery and a Developer API.
