Les communes du Port, de Saint-Denis, de Saint-Paul et de Salazie sont limitrophes de la Possession. Le territoire communal recouvre une grande partie du Cirque de Mafate et son point culminant se trouve tout près du sommet de Gros Morne. Limites géographiques : Ravine de la Grande Chaloupe au Nord et le lit de la Rivière des Galets au Sud (celle-ci, longue de 33km, ouvre le Cirque de Mafate sur la mer).
