## Description

The Legacy Project is an award-winning cultural and educational non-profit based in Chicago, Illinois. They are dedicated to researching and promoting the contributions of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer (LGBTQ) people to world history and culture. With a core team of historians, biographers, educators, advocates, activists, and leaders, their mission is to end the erasure of LGBTQ contributions from human history. The Legacy Project consists of various elements aimed at raising awareness of this often overlooked aspect of history. Their most notable achievement is The Legacy Walk, the world's only outdoor LGBTQ museum walk, located on North Halsted Street. This half-mile walk features 40 bronze memorials honoring LGBTQ individuals, both famous and obscure, who have made significant contributions throughout history. The Legacy Project also offers guided tours of The Legacy Walk for students, teachers, and the general public, as well as an Education Initiative that provides age-appropriate teaching tools and resources, free of charge. Their efforts have led to legislative changes, such as the passage of the Illinois LGBTQ-Inclusive Education Mandate in 2019, making Illinois the fifth state to mandate the inclusion of LGBTQ contributions to history in public schools. In addition to their work in Chicago, The Legacy Project has expanded its impact with satellite installations, including one inside Rainbow House in Topeka, Kansas. Moreover, they have introduced The Legacy Wall, a traveling installation that highlights the contributions of LGBTQ individuals across 20 different fields, sparking conversations and promoting cultural awareness. The Legacy Project's initiatives, including Legacy LIVE Series events and the goal of establishing an LGBTQ History Museum, aim to reclaim the lives and stories of LGBTQ individuals throughout history. Their work has reached millions of people worldwide through online education tools, social media, and the thousands of visitors who engage with their installations. Through their dedication and commitment, The Legacy Project is bringing LGBTQ history to the forefront and ensuring that these invaluable contributions are recognized and celebrated.
