Its departments focus on the regional geography of Europe, the theory, methods, and history of geography, and cartography and visual communication, alongside cross-departmental projects and collaborative research. The IfL also maintains research infrastructure and collections that support scholarship, including a library, archive, digital collections, map and atlas collections, and cartographic facilities. Through publications, networks, knowledge transfer, public events, lectures, and its blog, the institute shares research with academic and wider audiences. It hosts conferences and discussions on topics such as regional development, housing, visual geographies, and social and ecological change.
