About

Description

Liberty House is a renowned civic association and community organization based in Albany, GA. Established in 1981, their primary aim was to provide a safe temporary shelter for victims of domestic violence. Over the years, the organization has expanded its services to encompass various specialized programs for victims, ensuring their safety and well-being.

Founder Mary Fogarty recognized the urgent need for support for battered women and their children in the Albany area as early as the 1970s. With the support of community leaders, Liberty House was officially formed in 1981. Initially facing funding challenges, they partnered with the Anchorage, a program for alcoholics, to offer shelter to abused women and children when space was available.

Driven by their commitment to addressing domestic violence, Liberty House diligently worked toward establishing the first battered women's shelter in Albany in October 1980. They rented a 3-bedroom home and furnished it to serve their first client in February 1981. Seeing an increase in their caseload, they eventually relocated to a larger 6-bedroom home.

Today, Liberty House serves as a nonprofit agency in Dougherty County, covering a 17-county area in Southwest Georgia. They tirelessly provide comprehensive services to domestic violence victims, their children, families, and friends. In addition, Liberty House collaborates with the community to raise awareness, strengthen policies, and improve coordination in support of survivors and the eradication of domestic violence.

As a testament to their dedication, Liberty House is funded by federal and state grants, as well as by donations from the United Way, foundations, churches, and generous individuals. Their mission is to eliminate domestic violence by providing emergency shelter, advocacy, education, awareness, and community resources, ensuring that all victims are empowered to achieve self-sufficiency.
