## Description

LifeFoundry is a biotechnology company developing automated research capabilities to make biological engineering faster, more reliable, and cost-efficient. Based at the University of Illinois Research Park, the company combines synthetic biology, robotics, and machine learning in its D.A.R.W.In platform, a reconfigurable biofoundry designed to automate research workflows and support integrated design-build-test-learn cycles.

LifeFoundry works with organizations ranging from startups to Fortune 500 companies. Its services include support for research and development workflows, comprehensive strain engineering, and optimization of bioproduction processes. The platform is used for applications such as metabolic engineering and pathway optimization, DNA assembly, genome editing, and machine-learning-assisted protein engineering. Projects can include engineering microorganisms to produce valuable chemicals from low-cost renewable feedstocks.

By coordinating automated experiments with machine-learning-guided engineering, LifeFoundry aims to reduce manual work and accelerate research. The company’s broader goal is to help address bottlenecks in biotechnology research and development while advancing more economically efficient and environmentally sustainable production.
