Description
LIGO Scientific Collaboration (LSC) is a renowned group of scientists dedicated to directly detecting gravitational waves and utilizing them to delve into the mysteries of gravity and advance the field of gravitational wave science. They achieve this through extensive research, development of detection techniques, and operation of gravitational wave detectors. LSC's main science hub is the LIGO Observatories, situated in Hanford, Washington, and Livingston, Louisiana, with the additional GEO600 detector in Hannover, Germany.
The collaboration focuses on three key research areas: analyzing data from LIGO and GEO to search for gravitational waves, operating and characterizing the detectors, and designing future large scale detectors. Founded in 1997, LSC comprises more than 1000 scientists from over 100 institutions and 18 countries worldwide. Cooperation is essential in gravitational-wave astronomy, and thus LSC collaborates with the Virgo and KAGRA detectors to enhance the confidence, sensitivity, and precision of their gravitational wave detections.
To cite papers or join LSC, interested institutions should contact the LSC Spokesperson, and LSC is committed to promoting diversity and inclusivity within the collaboration. LSC continues to make groundbreaking discoveries and contribute to scientific excellence in the study of gravitational waves
