About

Description

Limerick Writers' Centre is a non-profit organization that was founded in 2008 with the aim of supporting and promoting writers from Limerick. They offer a wide range of products and services to nurture and celebrate the local writing community. Prior to the Covid pandemic, they facilitated three writers' groups where writers could meet, share their work, and receive support from their peers.

They also organized the monthly 'On the Nail' Literary Gathering, which provided a platform for writers to read their work in public and receive valuable feedback. In addition to these events, Limerick Writers' Centre engages in publishing activities, having published over 100 books since its establishment. These publications not only generate revenue for the Centre but also provide new and unpublished writers with a platform to showcase their work.

The Centre regularly hosts workshops in poetry, short story writing, scriptwriting, and invites literary agents to share insights on the publishing industry. Limerick Writers' Centre values diversity and aims to provide writing and publishing access to individuals and groups who may not typically have this opportunity. They strive to foster a love for literature, support readers, and actively engage with schools and communities through outreach programs.

They also seek to collaborate with existing cultural organizations and events to promote Limerick's creative excellence on a global scale. Limerick has a rich literary heritage, with notable writers such as Frank McCourt, Kate O'Brien, Michael Curtin, and many more. Limerick Writers' Centre builds upon this legacy by nurturing and supporting a new wave of writers through workshops, readings, talks, and publishing activities.

The Centre is run by a voluntary board of directors, and their base of operations has recently moved to 78 O'Connell Street. Their activities encompass a wide range of genres and formats, including poetry, prose, screenwriting, memoir, and life writing. While the Centre's flagship monthly literary gathering, On The Nail, is currently on hold, they continue to organize the Acoustic Club, promoting creativity in music.

They have also played a significant role in publishing projects, such as translating Frank McCourt's Angela's Ashes into Irish and publishing an anthology on Limerick poet Michael Hartnett. Through their poetry imprint, Revival Press, they actively publish contemporary poetry and provide guidance to aspiring self-publishers. Writers' groups have been a popular feature of the Centre, providing a platform for writers to critique each other's work.

They have also been involved in hosting an annual festival of poetry since 2013, as well as the 'Bring Your Limericks to Limerick' competition. These initiatives aim to celebrate and promote the value of poetry in all its forms. Limerick Writers' Centre is committed to supporting and inspiring writers of all ages and backgrounds, fostering a spirit of creative invention and promoting Limerick's creative excellence both within the local community and on a larger scale
