## Description

LITIENGINE is a free, open-source Java game engine for creating tile-based 2D video games. Started in 2014 by Bavarian brothers and released as open source in 2017, it is now developed by contributors worldwide and remains in beta. The engine is published under the permissive MIT License, allowing users to modify it and use it in commercial products. Built in plain Java with few external dependencies, it runs on Windows, Linux, and Mac OS.

LITIENGINE combines a lightweight library for core game infrastructure with utiLITI, a project management tool and map editor. Its features include 2D physics, rendering, and sound, along with resource management, localization, networking, and logging. Developers can work with TMX tile maps, create and control game entities, build menus and interfaces, and add particle effects. The engine supports WAV, OGG, and MP3 audio. Designed for approachable learning and rapid prototyping, LITIENGINE provides documentation, tutorials, and an API reference. Its community channels include a forum, Discord, and GitHub, where users can seek help, share projects, and contribute.
