Guided by the belief that nature already offers many answers to human challenges, she shares the message, “Look at nature, find the future.” Her work explores how biological systems can inspire alternatives to conventional, carbon-intensive technologies. Van Oenen’s interest began in childhood and developed into hands-on research, including experiments with spider cocoons and willow sap as a potential alternative to hard plastic, and investigations into algae for sustainable desalination. The latter project became Algaenius, a startup she launched at 19 to pursue solutions related to water sustainability. Her research and entrepreneurship have earned international recognition, including awards and finalist placements in sustainability, water and innovation competitions. Through speaking engagements, Van Oenen presents ideas about green technology, climate action and learning from nature.
