About
Description
Rubin Observatory is a brand new astronomical facility located on the Cerro Pachรณn ridge in Chile. Its main purpose is to carry out the Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST), a comprehensive ten-year survey of the Southern Hemisphere sky. Equipped with a powerful 3200-megapixel camera and six optical filters, Rubin Observatory captures images spanning an area as large as 40 full moons.
The giant 8. 4-meter telescope can swiftly adapt its position in less than five seconds, enabling the observatory to image the entire visible sky every 3-4 nights. This capability makes Rubin Observatory particularly effective at detecting changes in brightness or position, such as supernovae and asteroids.
Furthermore, its remarkable light-collecting power and sensitive camera facilitate the identification of approximately 20 billion galaxies and a similar number of stars. Expected to be completed by 2024, Rubin Observatory aims to answer some of the most pressing questions about the Universe
