One of their upcoming events features talented artist Theaster Gates. On August 26th, they will present the documentary film Black Artist Retreat: Reflections on 10 Years of Convening. This film, first premiered at the Venice Architecture Biennale, celebrates a decade of Gates' renowned Black Artist Retreat project, which brings artists from all over the world together to reflect on their craft, tackle industry challenges, and promote mentorship and knowledge-sharing. On August 27th, attendees can enjoy a screening of Billy Sings Amazing Grace, a touching collaboration between Theaster Gates and soul singer Billy Forston. This film explores the significance of music, spirituality, and emotional resonance in Gates' work. Another highlight is Gone Are the Days of Shelter and Martyr, which showcases an experimental musical intervention by Gates and The Black Monks in the sacred space of the Saint-Laurent church, while it was being demolished. This film reflects on the loss of sacred spaces and emphasizes their lasting spiritual significance. Additionally, LUMA Arles presents Theaster Gates' latest film, The Flood. This thought-provoking work combines gospel interpretations by The Black Monks, the youth choir Uniting Voices Chicago, and members of the Thompson Community Singers, with scientific insights on the possibility of a biblical great flood and the imminent threat of massive geological extinction. Through this unique blend of science and spirituality, The Flood sheds light on the reality of the climate crisis. To attend these screenings, visitors can purchase a toutes expositions ticket, granting access to all the exhibitions and events. Access to the auditorium is subject to availability. The screenings will take place on August 26th and 27th at La Tour, Auditorium (Level 1).
