## Description

The Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF) is a bipartisan initiative created by Congress in 1964 to protect and preserve natural areas, water resources, and our cultural heritage while providing recreation opportunities for all Americans. Thanks to federal funds from the LWCF, iconic national parks such as Rocky Mountain, the Grand Canyon, and the Great Smoky Mountains, as well as national wildlife refuges, forests, rivers, lakes, coastal areas, community parks, trails, and ball fields in all 50 states have been set aside for people to enjoy. The fund is sustained by $900 million in royalties paid by energy companies drilling for oil and gas on the Outer Continental Shelf (OCS) annually. This money is used to protect national parks and natural areas from development, as well as provide grants for state and local parks and recreation projects. LWCF has expanded over the years to include grants for working forests, wildlife habitat, drinking water supplies, and battlefields, among other things. The LWCF also has a substantial backlog of conservation needs, including vulnerable areas such as the Florida Everglades, Grand Teton National Park, and Civil War battlefields. The importance of LWCF is further highlighted by its economic impact. The funds allocated by the Department of the Interior for land acquisition in 2010 generated approximately $442 million in economic activity and supported the creation of about 3,000 jobs. Additionally, the LWCF state grants program contributes $20 billion to local and state economies through the support of America's state park system. Outdoor recreational activities, such as hunting, fishing, camping, and hiking, contribute a total of $788 billion to the economy annually and support 5.2 million jobs. These jobs are mainly focused on sustainable resource or tourism-based industries that cannot be outsourced.
