The American Society of Mammalogists (ASM), established in 1919, is a leading organization dedicated to advancing the scientific understanding of mammals. With around 2,500 members, including professional scientists, ASM promotes the study and conservation of mammals through various initiatives. Their mission encompasses not only the advancement of mammalogy but also the diversification of the profession and the use of science for effective conservation and management of mammalian species.

ASM achieves its goals through an array of publications, including the flagship Journal of Mammalogy, which features research across all aspects of mammalogy, and Mammalian Species, which provides species accounts. The Society also offers grants, fellowships, and annual meetings to foster education and outreach. Committed to inclusivity, ASM encourages participation from diverse backgrounds in all its operations. Their extensive resources, including a mammal images library, provide vital information and support for research and public policy related to mammals, stimulating interest and appreciation for these vital creatures in our ecosystem.
