## Description

Mapa De Apellidos is an online service for exploring the distribution and history of surnames. Its website lets visitors enter a surname, or two surnames together, to generate a map showing where the name is found in Spain. Searches are entered without accents, and sample surnames help users try the tool. The site also offers surname rankings, including lists of Spain’s most common, most widespread and longest surnames, and information about the origins of Spanish surnames. Its history content describes naming traditions such as patronymics, occupations, place names and nicknames.

Beyond Spain, Mapa De Apellidos provides surname maps for countries including Germany, Austria, Belgium, Costa Rica, Denmark, France, the Netherlands, Italy, Mexico, Poland, Portugal, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Romania and Switzerland. An Android app brings surname maps to mobile devices. The website is available in several languages, including Spanish, English, French, German, Italian, Catalan and Basque. Mapa De Apellidos is identified on its site as operated by Stefano Ravara.
