## Description

The Mathews County Historical Society is a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving, educating about, and promoting the history, traditions, and heritage of Mathews County, Virginia. Established in 1964 and incorporated in 1970, the tax-exempt 501(c)(3) society supports public access to local historical resources through its publications, archives, events, and historic sites.

Its collections include rare documents and photographs, maps, artifacts, and genealogical and architectural information. Visitors can explore digital archives and library resources, with materials available at the Mathews Memorial Library. The Society also shares local history through features on historic homes, Fort Nonsense Historical Park, New Point Comfort Lighthouse, the Mathews Oral History Project, and other county topics.

Visitors can tour the Tompkins Cottage Museum and Thomas James Store on Saturdays from April through October. The Society organizes lectures, music concerts, and educational opportunities, and offers publications and ornaments through its shop. Members and supporters can join, renew, donate, or volunteer as cottage docents.
