## Description

The U.S. Missile Defense Agency (MDA), part of the U.S. Department of War, develops, deploys, and sustains layered, integrated missile defense capabilities. Its mission is to help defend the United States, deployed forces, allies, and friends from missile attacks throughout all phases of flight. The agency reports that it has fielded an initial capability to protect the United States and its allies against limited ballistic missile attack.

MDA’s work brings together sensors, command-and-control systems, communications, testing, and weapon systems. Its programs include Aegis Ballistic Missile Defense, Ground-based Midcourse Defense, PATRIOT Advanced Capability-3, and Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD). The agency also supports rapid capability development and international cooperation, and conducts flight tests and technology efforts involving systems such as the Sea-Based X-Band Radar and space-based tracking sensors.

Beyond its defense programs, MDA provides public information through news, fact sheets, videos, and budget documents. It offers STEM outreach, research and small-business opportunities, and career and scholarship programs.
