MEDIC Blood Center is a vital resource in East Tennessee and Southeastern Kentucky communities. Established in 1958 under the sponsorship of the Knoxville Academy of Medicine, MEDIC was founded by Dr. Carl Nelson with the aim of centralizing blood collection, testing, and distribution from volunteer donors.

Accredited by AABB and a member of America’s Blood Centers, MEDIC adheres to the safety regulations established by the FDA and the State of Tennessee. The blood center operates on processing fees charged to hospitals to cover its operational and capital costs. As a unique feature, MEDIC offers a Blood Coverage Program that covers members' blood supplier processing fees at any hospital in the country.

Serving 26 area hospitals in 23 counties, MEDIC is the primary provider of blood and blood-related products in the region.
