MELiSSA Space Research Program, also known as Micro-Ecological Life Support System Alternative, is a pioneering European project in the field of regenerative life support systems. With over 30 years of experience, MELiSSA aims to create a circular future by developing autonomous systems that can produce food, water, and oxygen from mission wastes. The project was established in 1987 and has since gained international recognition as the most advanced effort in closed loop life support systems.

MELiSSA offers a wide range of products and services, including research and development, waste treatment, nitrification, photobioreactor, higher plant characterization, food preparation, modelling and control, flight experiments, and technology demonstrators. The program also focuses on ground demonstration, terrestrial applications, and education and communication initiatives. MELiSSA is comprised of around 50 organizations, including universities, research centers, space industries, and terrestrial companies.
