## Description

The Melville Society is a community of scholars, general readers, and artists devoted to the study and appreciation of Herman Melville’s life, works, and influence. Founded in 1945, the organization supports scholarship while creating opportunities for people to engage with Melville’s writing and its continuing cultural significance. Members can participate in conferences, panels, events, and other programs, and support the Society through membership and donations. The Society sponsors academic panels at major literary conventions and offers resources including fellowships, awards, digital materials, a media gallery, and the Melville Society Archive. Its Cultural Project develops public-facing programs and initiatives, including a book donation program and activities connected with the Moby-Dick Marathon. The Society also publishes Leviathan: A Journal of Melville Studies, an award-winning journal issued three times a year by Johns Hopkins University Press and available online through Project MUSE. Through its publications, events, projects, and research resources, the Melville Society connects audiences and encourages lasting interest in the author of Moby-Dick.
