## Description

Merlin Bird ID is a free bird identification guide from Cornell University, designed to help bird watchers and outdoor enthusiasts recognize birds around the world. The app offers several ways to identify a bird: Sound ID listens to nearby songs and calls and suggests possible matches in real time, while Photo ID uses a picture from your camera or camera roll to provide likely options. Both features work offline. For a step-by-step approach, the Bird ID Wizard asks three simple questions and returns possible matches.

Merlin also helps users keep track of their discoveries with a digital life list, where identified birds can be saved as personal birding memories. Powered by eBird, it can create custom lists of birds likely to be seen in a chosen location, with filters for place and time of year. Users can also explore downloaded offline birds. The service draws on community-contributed photos and recordings, expert identification tips, range maps from Birds of the World, and eBird observations.
