## Description

MICROBE is a European research project focused on developing innovative approaches to microbiome biobanking. It brings together scientific expertise and know-how in research infrastructures to support the collection, preservation and study of microbiome samples. Its ambition is to preserve taxonomic and functional biodiversity as fully as possible, while optimizing samples for defined downstream analyses. The project also targets the isolation of microbiome members from different domains and the assembly of synthetic consortia designed to retain, or potentially improve, the functional diversity of the original communities. A further goal is to provide a comprehensive operational blueprint for establishing microbiome biobanking infrastructure.

MICROBE shares its work and resources through a project website featuring a data portal, publications, public deliverables, posters, training materials and videos. It also organizes workshops, meetings and information events, including activities addressing ethics, legal and social issues, and access and benefit-sharing. The project is supported by the European Union; its stated aims include research that may contribute to understanding tiny life forms relevant to soil and human health.
