About
Description
Minnkota Power Cooperative is a not-for-profit electric generation and transmission cooperative headquartered in Grand Forks, N. D. Since its formation in 1940, Minnkota has been providing wholesale electric energy to 11 member-owner distribution cooperatives in eastern North Dakota and northwestern Minnesota.
These distribution cooperatives serve nearly 137,000 consumer accounts in a 34,500 square-mile area, powering homes, farms, schools, and businesses. Additionally, Minnkota operates as the operating agent for the Northern Municipal Power Agency (NMPA), which supplies electricity to 12 associated municipals serving over 15,000 consumer accounts. Minnkota is dedicated to delivering safe, reliable, affordable, and environmentally responsible electricity.
Their primary source of electric generation is the Milton R. Young Station, a lignite coal-based power plant near the town of Center, N. D.
They also incorporate renewable energy into their portfolio, with energy purchased from three North Dakota wind farms and hydroelectricity purchased from the Garrison Dam. To ensure efficient power delivery, Minnkota manages an extensive electric transmission infrastructure, consisting of over 3,340 miles of transmission line and 252 substations. With a mission to provide the best energy value in the region, Minnkota Power Cooperative has been committed to meeting the energy needs of its member-owners for over 80 years
