## Description

The Zambia Ministry of Health is a government institution whose core mandate is to improve the health and well-being of people across Zambia. It oversees a nationwide health system, providing services through community health centres, rural health posts, general hospitals, and provincial, central, and specialist facilities. Its work spans primary and community healthcare, preventive care, outreach, and treatment, alongside specialized and emergency services.

The Ministry’s programmes address adolescent health, maternal and child health, immunisation, HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis, and the prevention and screening of non-communicable diseases such as diabetes and hypertension. It also coordinates COVID-19 vaccination services and supports public health security, emergency preparedness, laboratory capacity, and workforce development in collaboration with partners.

To strengthen access to care, the Ministry has introduced a peri-operative strategy focused on expanding surgical, obstetric, and anaesthesia services. It publishes national clinical resources, including the Zambia Essential Medicines List, National Formulary, and standard treatment guidelines. The Ministry also oversees a network of hospitals, including the University Teaching Hospital, Cancer Diseases Hospital, Chainama Hills Mental Hospital, and the National Heart Hospital.
