# Morts

- **Website:** <https://morts.fr>
- **Primary alias:** `morts.fr`

## Description

Using the INSEE file of deceased persons, it provides public access to more than 25 million records dating back to 1970, searchable by name, town, or year. The site is updated monthly and offers free email alerts for new records matching a chosen name or location.

Beyond its directory, morts.fr presents mortality statistics, trends, geographic comparisons, surname rankings, and life expectancy analyses, including comparisons by first name. Its studies explore topics such as changing surname patterns, regional names, longevity, and excess deaths during heatwaves. Visitors can also browse recently added records and a daily selection of notable people who died on that date.

For people managing a bereavement, the site provides a practical guide to official post-death procedures and a directory of authorized funeral service providers searchable by town or business name. The INSEE data is published under the Open Licence 2.0 and may be cited with a link.
