Mozambique School Lunch Initiative

The Mozambique School Lunch Initiative is a non-profit organization dedicated to improving child nutrition and stimulating agricultural development. With 80% of the population in Mozambique unable to afford an adequate diet and nearly half of all children suffering from chronic malnutrition, the organization is committed to making a positive impact. They invest in community-owned school lunch programs, providing consistent meals that help prevent malnutrition and keep children in school, eliminating the need for them to forage for food during lean periods.

To further enhance nutritional impact, they collaborate with government health services to deliver deworming and iron supplementation along with the meals. In addition to addressing the short-term issue of malnutrition, the Mozambique School Lunch Initiative takes a long-term approach. They develop local agricultural supply chains by providing farmers with improved inputs and use the produce in school lunches while selling the surplus in markets.

This not only sustains the school lunch program but also creates a revenue-generating mechanism for farmers. By working at the grassroots level and empowering communities to be part of the value chain, the organization is able to scale school lunch programs to reach more schools and make a lasting difference.
