About

Description

Mpala Research Centre, established in 1994, is located in the heart of the Ewaso ecosystem in central Kenya. This vast region, characterized by arid and semi-arid savannahs and woodlands, is home to a diverse range of flora and fauna, boasting over 550 bird species and 100 mammal species. Remarkably, it houses large populations of elephants and rare species like the Grevy’s zebra, reticulated giraffe, and African wild dog.

Covering over 48,000 acres on the Laikipia Plateau, Mpala serves as a thriving hub for scientific research. Unlike national parks, Mpala offers a unique opportunity for scientists and students to conduct experimental and manipulative research, addressing real-world problems and exploring cutting-edge science. It provides a living laboratory where the environment can be manipulated, enabling landscape-level, controlled experiments.

With a commitment to sustainable livelihoods and wildlife conservation, Mpala's mission is to support research that enhances ecosystem health and promotes economic advancement. Through their research, Mpala contributes to the understanding and conservation of the remarkable biodiversity found in the Ewaso ecosystem
