## Description

The MUSSEL Project is an internet-based research resource focused on the systematics, evolution, and ecology of freshwater mussels and other bivalves. Its central resource, the MUSSEL Project Database (MUSSELpdb), brings together current information on taxonomy, nomenclature, scientific literature, specimen vouchers, phylogeny, and related research data. Users can browse the database by navigating its taxonomy hierarchy or search taxa, localities, and publications by keyword; a Google search option is also available. The database covers freshwater mussels of the order Unionida from around the world, alongside selected information about other bivalves. The project also shares educational and research content through features such as the Mussel of the Month, which highlights a species and relevant scientific findings, and an archive of past installments. The site is developed and maintained by Dan Graf and Kevin Cummings, with funding from the National Science Foundation. By organizing scientific information and making it accessible online, the MUSSEL Project supports research and discovery in mollusk biology.
