## Description

NACRES, the Centre for Biodiversity Conservation and Research, works to safeguard biodiversity in Georgia and the South Caucasus. Its conservation activities take place at national and local levels and are guided by scientific research, sustainability principles and community participation. The organisation studies species and habitats to inform conservation, supports protected areas and the development of the Emerald Network, and promotes sustainable management of pastures and forests. Its work also addresses climate change, human–wildlife conflict and the relationship between local communities and biodiversity. NACRES contributes to environmental policy and legislation, encourages sustainable nature-based tourism, and helps captive bears in Georgia. Its research and programmes cover topics including species, habitats, non-timber forest resources, natural pastures and conservation socio-economics. Recent work highlighted on its website includes radiotelemetry research on the East Caucasian tur, support for volunteer community firefighters in Borjomi, efforts to document the return of the leopard to Georgia, and electric fences as a way to reduce conflict between people and wildlife.
