## Description

Nakanojo Biennale is an international contemporary art festival held every two years in Nakanojo, Gunma Prefecture, Japan. The festival connects contemporary art with the region’s distinctive rural culture and landscapes, including mountain scenery, wetlands, historic hot-spring districts, silkworm traditions, wooden school buildings, and local festivals. Its mission is to help renew appreciation for places and customs that are at risk of being forgotten.

Artists from Japan and abroad are invited to develop work through artist-in-residence programs in the area, then present their projects across venues throughout the town. The festival features a diverse program of exhibitions and performances, with events such as markets adding to the visitor experience. Nakanojo Biennale also shares information about participating artists and venues, and provides access to maps, visitor passports, original goods, and exhibition catalogues through its shop and online store.

The 11th festival, Nakanojo Biennale 2027, is scheduled for September 18 to October 24, 2027, across locations in Nakanojo. The organizers are currently inviting artists with creative, innovative projects across a range of disciplines.
