## Description

The Nana Bonsu Oral History Project is a Manchester-based heritage initiative created by First Cut Performing Arts and Media to document the life and work of Beresford “Berry” Edwards, also known as Chief Nana Bonsu. A founding figure in Manchester’s African Caribbean community, Edwards was a Pan-Africanist and community activist whose work advanced social justice, equal opportunities, and community support. The project traces his life from migration and family life to his involvement in local organisations, education, cultural events, and political activism. It highlights initiatives including the West Indian Organisations Co-ordinating Committee, Moss Side Carnival, Kwanzaa celebrations, a Saturday supplementary school, and campaigns against racial discrimination and restrictive trade union practices. The website offers a documentary, 21 oral-history video interviews, photographs, a media archive, and an educational magazine produced for the project’s exhibition. Developed with support from the Heritage Lottery Fund, the initiative also involved 50 young people and volunteers in exploring Black British history and culture from the 1960s to the 2000s.
