## Description

The National Blood Service Agency (NBSA) is a Nigerian government institution responsible for regulating, coordinating, and providing safe, adequate, quality blood and blood products for transfusion. Its work aims to deliver these services cost-effectively to people who need them across the country, with a strong emphasis on voluntary, non-remunerated blood donation. The agency’s operations began in 2005 as the National Blood Transfusion Service, established through a partnership between the Federal Government of Nigeria and the United States Government, including support through PEPFAR. The NBSA was established by law in 2021.

The agency encourages the public to donate blood through donation drives and outreach, including school programmes, community campaigns, and World Blood Donor Day activities. Its donor process includes registration, pre-donation counselling, refreshments, and blood donation. The NBSA also supports awareness and education on safe blood donation and transfusion, and reports collaboration with health institutions and partners on research, staff training, technical support, haemovigilance, and laboratory services. Through these activities, it works to strengthen Nigeria’s blood supply and transfusion safety.
