NC-SARA is a private nonprofit organization that aims to expand students' access to educational opportunities and ensure more efficient regulation of distance education programs. In 2013, state regulators, education leaders, accreditors, the U.S. Department of Education, and institutions joined forces to establish the State Authorization Reciprocity Agreements (SARA), which streamline regulations for distance education programs. NC-SARA operates in partnership with four regional compacts and helps states, institutions, policymakers, and students understand the purpose and benefits of participating in SARA. Currently, over 2,200 institutions in 49 member states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands voluntarily participate in SARA. NC-SARA strives to improve program quality, facilitate access to distance education programs across state lines, reduce costs and bureaucracy, enhance coordination between states, and provide valuable oversight of distance education programs.
