## Description

Neki is a sharded PostgreSQL platform by PlanetScale, designed to help organizations scale real Postgres beyond the limits of a single machine. Each shard runs PostgreSQL, while Neki provides the router, sidecars, and control plane to coordinate queries and database operations. The platform is built to support very high query volumes and petabytes of data, with online shard splitting and zero-downtime resharding as workloads grow.

Neki includes connection pooling, shard groups, explicit data-topology controls, and high availability across availability zones. It can track shard health, promote replicas, and update routing while applications continue using the same Postgres endpoint. Teams can also coordinate schema changes, version upgrades, imports, and cutovers through repeatable workflows. Zero-downtime imports allow an existing database to keep serving traffic while data is copied, replicated, and verified before cutover. Each shard has its own write-ahead log and logical replication path, supporting standard Postgres CDC patterns. Neki is available for teams starting with a single shard or moving an existing database, with support from the PlanetScale team.
