## Description

The Nippon Foundation Nereus Program is a prestigious global initiative uniting 17 leading institutions dedicated to enhancing our understanding of the interconnected human-ocean system. This program focuses on a multidisciplinary approach, integrating insights from both natural and social sciences to tackle pressing ocean-related challenges.

Nereus is pivotal in researching sustainable fisheries management, climate resilience, and legal frameworks governing ocean resources. Their contributions include innovative frameworks for climate-resilient fisheries, critiques of harmful fisheries subsidies, and analyses related to the UN Ocean Treaty. The program also examines vital biodiversity governance lessons and the socio-economic impacts of climate change on marine ecosystems, particularly coral reefs.

Additionally, Nereus promotes social responsibility and sustainable governance, emphasizing the need for accountability in ocean management practices. Through workshops, publications, and presentations, it advocates for ocean stewardship, fostering a deeper relationship between people and the sea. By bridging research and policy, the Nereus Program is at the forefront of advancing solutions that empower societies to sustainably interact with marine environments.
